Photos From Studio I Final

For those of you who don't know, I'm currently a student at Columbia studying towards a BFA in Photography. For my final I did on location, outdoor environmental portraits. There was no real theme, I just wanted to see how well I could adapt to lighting in different environments.

The first set is of Tiffany. This set was all shot on Northerly Island during the magic hour and after a downpour.

After the tree's we went for a more aggressive look.

We thought the rain before would have ruined the entire shoot but instead it left big puddles of reflective goodness all over the place.

Second model was Winny. This set was shot mostly below the South Loop Market because it was raining everywhere else.

This was Winny being bored while I was setting up lights.

Photo tip: Justin clamps are the most versatile tool in an on location set up. They go anywhere and are easier to hide than a lightstand.

The third set is of David Lai a fellow Columbia Student and awesome photographer! Check out his blog for his final project, those color shifts are SICK! I hope I could have a fraction of his artistic vision one day. He's definitely been through most of what I went through this semester and I'm happy to have more classes with him next semester. No more slacking next year right Dave?!

I'm addicted to reflections..

Finally, I photographed Albert Yau of SecondPrint Productions. I'm a second shooter for him at a lot of weddings so show him some love by calling him up and scheduling a meeting for your wedding! I'm serious, do it now, dont even bother looking at the rest of this post. Dont forget to add a second photographer! You won't regret it!

Yes, thats his Bianchi, and it looks even more beautiful in person! It's going to make its first appearance at Bike the Drive.

This is probably one of my favorite shots of the night. Let Bianchi know if they want a model and a photog!

I definitely learned a lot from this project. I tried to adapt the model to their environment as much as possible but that meant I wouldn't be able to plan too many shots ahead of time. And everything you think might go wrong, usually does and the only way to prepare for it is to have back ups of everything. That means extra flashes, extra pocket wizards, extra batteries and try not to be as clumsy as I am.

Anyway I'd like to thank all the models for helping me finish my project so last minute, without them I probably would have failed out of art school and be working at Kinko's straight flippin' copies!

Beginnings of my Final Project

As some of you may know, finals are just around the corner and this is crunch time for art students. All our final projects we've been working on all year are due in two weeks time. But due to my laziness and lack of a model and final project ideas, I've put it off to these last two weeks to shoot.

Yesterday I photographed Tiffany Lau for my outdoor portrait final. No real ideas yet, but I tend to build an idea as I'm working. Anyway I came home thinking I got some super awesome photos but when I started to edit them on Lightroom my heart dropped. They were shot in JPEG!! Not just any jpeg either, the smallest jpeg with the stairsteps and in srgb. So not only is the image small but the color space is wrong too! Anyway thats a big lesson learned, check your settings and dont wait until last minute to shoot your final project.

Even though I wont be able to make 13x19 prints from these images I figured I should at least blog a preview.
